Masculinity and his jovial approach to the macabre

This MA collection by Matthew Miller was inspired by a conversation, in a farewell toast with a friend who was soon departing for war. “Go on, get the round in, you probably won’t see me again!’ his friend said. Later Matthew thought deeply about this comment and how young men mask their uncertainty and fear with a jovial brush off.
The collection “Masculinity and his jovial approach to the macabre” was born.
Everything caught my eye about Millers work. That white bone shirt in particular, incredible detailing. Is that front buttoned on and detachable I wonder? His illustrations are quite terrifying but beautiful at the same time. The colour really jumps out around the eyes in the face, whereas the garments stay two-tone. Quite unusual for fashion illustrations.
The collection itself pops with laser cut polka dot bombs, dancing skeleton pique bibs, cable knitted skulls, unexploded pom poms and army boy digital prints. Quite extroadinary.
You may recognise Matthew now as being one of the Fashion East pack at London Fashion Week.
