DETAILS AT BALENCIAGA

Balenciaga-Fall-RTW-2013.8

Balenciaga AW13.

Some of my favourite details at the Walenciaga show. I’m totally obsessed with the cracked paint pieces, the knitted look featured last here, being my favourite. I wasn’t sure the whole collection worked for me, It’s obvious he was trying to hit a different age bracket but the genius of Wang is that his label appeals to many generations all at once. Still, get those shoes on my feet!

  1. Wow, the cracked effect on some of the fabrics is incredibly dramatic, especially in such austere high-neck shapes – love it. I’m (almost) tempted to recreate the effect with a tin of dulux and a jumper. Almost…

    1. That’s such a good idea! Although I tried on those white painted jeans in the MMM x H&M collab and literally could not move in them! Maybe it would work better with a jumper..

  2. I have mixed feelings about it. The cracks had already been seen at MMM, and as for the silhouettes and cuts, he kind of played it safe. But I have to admit I do like the overall aesthetics. And the collection certainly has ‘Wang’ written all over it. Can’t wait to see how he progresses x

    1. I know that Margiela did it first but I like Wang’s reinterpretation. Designers wouldn’t be able to do a lot of things if they were held back by MMM beating them to it.
I’m excited to see where it will go, but it is strange seeing him trying to reach a new audience.

  3. his collection is perfection!

  4. I’m not sure what to make of Wangciaga – it’s kind of the same as I feel about Hedi/Saint Laurent – I like bits of it, don’t like other bits. I feel they’re changing fundamentally what the brand is, from something which created the trends one or two seasons in advance, to something which is simply contemporary. Not necessarily a bad thing, just different. I wish he had done more with the collection given the resources he must have, but I love that texture too! It looks so much nicer here in high detail.

    1. It was definitely not a big change. What’s worse is, I wasn’t that crazy over his own collection, it was clear he didn’t have the time to put as much love into it as usual. As for Balenciaga, she shapes weren’t so covetable. He’s always done texture and knit well, so that was a success but I didn’t want to wear most of it. I know I’m not Balenciaga’s target marget, but still.

  5. My friend James used to be the exec chef at the Chedi in Muscat. A couple of years ago there was a cyclone that washed away a lot of the hotel beachfront, leaving layers of clay that cracked under the desert heat. He was also inspired and had plates commissioned from photographs he took on the days after the storm, which he then used in the fine dining restaurants. These pieces are so reminiscent of that.
